SPARTA is a Secure Password Authentication and Realtime Tracking Application.
SPARTA best works together with NATS and CARMA, which both use features which SPARTA offers internally.
SPARTA allows you to only protect a full Apache Virtual Server, it can not be used to protect single directories due to the very early stage SPARTA protects the access to the files. This usually is not a problem because it really does not matter if you use http://members.domain.com/ or http://www.domain.com/members/ as the members area URL.
Your Members Area then has a designable login page, which can be matched to your site design. The login page can also feature a turing-image (jumbled up letters in an image) to protect very efficiantly against brute force attacks, SPARTA will not start authenticating unless the code was correctly entered, thus saving resources. Your Members Area can also now have a logout page, which lets your members logout of the system and get a nice logout screen presented to them, with maybe some more upsell links or the like. SPARTA also makes linking to video files in external applications easier and better because there will not be any login issues, no additional login prompts or anything like that, making your customer's experience more seemless and enjoyable.
SPARTA, next to brute force attacks, also protects against password trading/sharing.
On top of the authentication features, SPARTA, when used together with NATS, also provides more detailed information on the member that is currently logged in. It makes trial members areas easier to handle because you can figure out if a current member is a trial member or not by simply calling apache_note("sparta_trial') to figure out if they are a trial member. It also automatically logs last login times into the NATS db which helps in optimizing your updates, and fight reseller fraud.
